Golden Bean - RESTAURANT REVIEW

Hey!
This review has been a long time coming. I have visited this place a couple of times. It is very popular in the city of Kumasi in the Ashanti region of Ghana. All you have to do is tell a taxi driver you're going to "Golden Bean" and without any hassle. Coming from KNUST campus you shouldn't pay more than 30 cedis to get there a price which is time dependent of course.
Golden Bean is a hotel/ restaurant with an outdoor pool, an outdoor dinning area too where guests enjoy highlife and jazz music while dining. They also have  a well stocked bar and lounge area.
The place is a delight to witness at night with its numerous lights casting a golden glow to the place.
I have been here to sample their buffet and have enjoyed the experience. For the purpose if this review however I decided to order from their menu. To my surprise, I was disappointed. The waiter wasn't sure what was available and what wasn't.
My companion asked for grilled tilapia while I asked for pasta and shrimp. None of which was available.
I then asked for mashed potatoes and beef sauce while my companion asked for  fish fillet with a side of mashed potatoes as well. I personally dread eating rice when I eat out because we have enough of rice on campus. We had to wait for about an hour before the food was brought.
While waiting, I asked for a cosmopolitan while my companion asked for a mojito.
To my surprise, the cocktails looked the same. The same yellow colour. The Mojito was better.
When our meals arrived, I was completely dismayed to see my partners plate. There was a thick chunk of fish with a side of steamed string beans and carrots. It tasted worse than it looked. Completely bland with an after taste I couldn't place but was unpleasant.
My beef sauce was sadly overwhelmed by the unnecessary garnish of spring onions. To call it a garnish would be ridiculous. I might as well have order beef and spring onions with a side of mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes weren't particularly good either.
My meal however was better compared to my friend's.
Looking at the fish fillet dish  I immediately recognised the lack of gravy for the mashed potatoes. I would've expected the waiter to point out how incompatible his order was.
Immediately regretted ordering as it seemed other customers who opted for the buffet were enjoying their meal.
Their food and drinks were quite pricy and we spent more than 300 cedis for food we couldn't enjoy.
Would I go back to Golden Bean to eat? Most likely but with my heels headed straight to the buffet spread which actually a cheaper option.

  1. I guess they just have good days and bad days.Cuss quite the contrary I really enjoyed dinner there. The service from the waiter was almost perfect and the food was extremely palatable. Plus my partner and I spent less than 200 ghc.

    1. Thank you Anulika for your comment. I would expect a restaurant of their standard to be consistent with their good days don't you think? I'm glad you went on a good day.
