The Backyard Bar & Grill Review
I've never been more proud to introduce myself as Imaobong to the Efik chef that whips up the deliciousness that The Backyard serves. I even managed to speak a little ibibio which Efik people understand. I'd like to use this opportunity to clarify to you guys that although Akwaibom and Calabar used to be one state, we've been separated and some parts of Calabar speak a language the rest of us might not understand but majority of us speak efik or ibibio.
Enough of the history lesson.
I love the thought that was put into The Backyard. From the simple menu to the drinks and decor.
The Backyard has a different "vibe" than what you would find in similar places. I went on a Friday around 8pm and although the place was almost full we were seated easily in the outdoor area.
A lot of things I observed made me respect the owner because as I mentioned earlier, he put a lot of thought into the place and no area was overlooked.
I have to especially commend the service. Waiters pulled out seats for ladies, ladies were served first. You know that thing about manners that's been completely forgotten? I must say I was showered with attention. Not the annoying kind where the waiter is borderline a pest but the kind that makes you feel special. Like you're Otedolas daughter or something.
The music was a lovely mix of electric and retro style music that was so good most people were moving in their seats. Now I must say, this is not the place to show off your shaku shaku skills.
My jaw dropped when I saw who the dj was. No you don't know him and that's all I'm going to say about that. Go see for yourself. I want to be him when I grow up.
To the reason I have this blog; FOOD!
I had their Lamb Chops with a side of Jollof rice. "A" had their Suya Prawns with Potato wedges and in true Yoruba (Western Nigerians) spirit requested for pepper sauce. He completely ignored the ketchup. LOL
I'm teary eyed writing this because I don't know how to put in words how awesome the experience was. Our meals were served together, in less than 15minutes (don't forget they had a full house), the food was a piece of heaven brought down to earth.
My lamb chops was crispy and juicy at the same time. I didn't have to go to the gym to get the strength to cut it into bite sizes. Infact it was like cutting butter (for lack of a better example). The jollof rice was so good I had to compliment the chef. At first the owner came in record time thinking it was a complaint and when I said I just wanted to compliment the chef, he went and despite the busy night got the chef to come!
The Suya Prawns were big pieces of perfectly made prawns covered in a suya mix. Obviously well thought out as it was amazing. Dont get me started on the wedges.
For drinks I got a Mojito. Let me rephrase, for drinks, I got a perfectly made Mojito and in record time too.
You can smoke shisha and book them for private events too. They have parking available for about 12 cars.
Whenever I have money to spend or someone to impress, I'm taking them here. You guys should stop by. Tell them Imaobong sent you!
I almost forgot to mention, even the security at parking opens the car door for you.
Prices
Mojito N3,500
Lamb Chops N14,000
Suya Prawns N8,000
